January 2007

Do you ever have one of those days when you start questioning if what you are doing makes a difference in the world? In the grand scheme of things, does it really make a difference?

As I read the news and see what’s happening in the world … Pres Bush new Iraqi plan and wanting to send more troops to Iraq … Florida #2 beating Ohio #1 to win the college National football championship … Nancy Pelosi sworn in as Speaker of the House …

It almost seems like what I’m doing is not that important. So, what if a twiki status page is not updated on time? So, what if a product is released a day late, an hour late? Is it really such a big deal? Will the world end?

Well, maybe in an alternate “grand scheme of things”, it makes a difference. In the very competitive world of web services, deploying timely and quality products does make a difference … and if the process to get there requires doing all these things that may seem meaningless … well, they still need to get done … and i suppose that’s all there is to it …

AM:
There is an emergency build for you today. It needs to be tested. This is to patch a problem and we are going to deploy the patch tomorrow! [Hands out bug number to look at and verify].
Me: OK. No problem.

Late PM:
OK. Build#1 is ready to be tested. Please test.
Me: OK. Running test. Told the rest of the QA team to run their set of regression tests against the build.
Test is taking a while to finish up. Meanwhile, got pinged multiple times about the test result.

While tests are stil running, got informed of change in plans. The patch is going to be deployed to mulitple farms tonight! Yikes!

Finally, the test are finished. I went through the test results. Oh no! Lots of failures and core dumps.

Problem reported and much debugging going on! I am to stay tuned for any new builds and fixes.

I guess it’s going to be a late nighter today … :)

No wonder I’m tired … :)

Tired

This is not a good way to start the New Year! For some reason or another, I’m feeling tired! I think I’m feeling the post-holiday “blah” on top of the post-vacation “blah”.

Well, today is the first day of 2007. Let me see, what did I do? Well, I continued to work on that project that I started 2 days ago which was to “fix” one of the rooms in the house and make it more usable and have more storage space. I finished painting the room and organized the shoe rack! I will post pictures when I am done (before and after pictures!). I also created my New Year’s resolution’s list.

So, overall, it was a pretty productive day … although I should be sleeping now since I’m not feeling very well ….

I also managed to setup wordpress and create this first blog :) .
